Last week I took a final step in my WordPress journey. I archived the repo for Kana, the WordPress development environment I had been working on since 2021.
When I started working on Kana it was a fun project for me, fulfilling a desire to build such an app ever since DevKit was cancelled at WP Engine. I enjoyed building what I had hoped DevKit would have become and, though I never publicized it, I think it was a very successful effort.
The problem is I no longer need it. I don’t build in WordPress anymore and I have no real desire to do so again. As a result Kana was just something I was constantly fixing every time a component updated. It had ceased being a project and had become a chore.
I archived it once before, when I left WP Engine, only to bring it back when I built a small WordPress plugin at SuperFile. This time, however, I don’t see me bringing it back again.
Sometimes a project just reaches its natural end and that’s where I think Kana was. Now it’s time to move on to other ideas in tech that is still exciting to me, rather than just a chore.
