I’ve been a tech minimalist for as long as I’ve had tech. One computer is great. Two is a waste, etc. Right now I have 3 machines capable of writing a blog post.
The first is my MacBook Pro. It’s my primary computer and a beast that rarely leaves my desk. While I enjoy writing on it, I often find myself distracted with code or other non-essential tasks. Well-intentioned posts quickly turn into something else all too quickly.
Then there’s my iPad Pro. I’ve tried to make iPad a writing machine for years. Until the Magic Keyboard on my current M4 iPad, it just never stuck. Writing with it felt like a forced march rather than a usable experience. Today it is a wonderful machine. It is capable of doing almost anything but code and it performs just as well as either of my laptops.
Finally is my Framework laptop. I bought it a few years ago to help me make Kana compatible with Linux and Windows. At one point, I thought I would make it my primary machine but my family is too tied to Apple. So, instead, it has mostly sat on my desk until this past week when I put Fedora 42 on it. With a newer screen it has become a wonderful machine for writing and general browsing. I just need to avoid getting distracted with code on it.
This leaves me with three options for working on this site. Maybe, just maybe, it’s the setup I’ve been looking for to actually write. The catch is I need to overcome my desire to keep my tech simple. Whether I can do this is yet to be seen. At least I’ll have my options to help me find out.
