I love my Framework laptop. I’ve had it for a few years, most of them running Ubuntu and it is almost perfect.
While the keyboard and trackpad are definitely better than my Macs, the one thing that leaves a bit to be desired is the screen. I have the first generation screen and it is both more prone to glare than any laptop I’ve ever had and also not always the clearest.
Historically that would probably mean I replace the whole laptop. Not this time though. Yesterday I ordered the newer 2nd gen screen and also a few other upgrades (stronger hinge, 2nd gen webcam and orange bezel) while I was at it. With a little luck that will make it a much nicer machine for video calls and, therefore, take it a little closer to being my daily driver.
While I was add it I also pre-ordered one of the new AMD mainboards. I’m not sure I’ll finish that upgrade or not yet though, but I have some time to decide.
I can’t tell you how grateful I am to have a laptop I can upgrade like this. A few years ago I had an Acer that died at 13 months and was going to cost more than I paid for it to fix. I’ve also had countless MacBook Pros die at right around 3 years old (not to mention the 4 keyboard replacements in 2 years on my 2016 MBP). All of them typically resulted in completely new machines. That I can change parts out on this one is amazing.
