There's More to Fitness than Steps

I’ve been counting my steps for about 13 years. For most of that time it has been my sole mode of exercise.

In some ways that wasn’t a bad thing. Through the pandemic, for instance, I hit a streak of 432 days of hitting 10,000 steps, I’ve never been that consistent on exercise in my life. When going to a gym wasn’t an option and when it’s too hot out for running walking kept me moving.

The problem comes when walking is all I do.

Forget weights or other forms of cardio.

Forget any organized sports.

My limited time has been consumed by hitting 10,000 steps at the expense of everything else.

As I move into 2025 I’ve decided to do something about this starting with getting rid of my steps app. We have an exercise room in our building with elliptical machines, stationary bikes and other great equipment and it’s well past time for me to start using all of it, not just walking on the treadmill.

This might seem like a no-brainer to most, but it’s a bit step (pun intended) for me. Walking helped start me on a real path to getting healthier and I’ve been very nervous about changing that but… It’s time.
