I’ve had more gadgets than I can remember. From phones to cameras, computers to TVs and so many others. For the most part a gadget, at least to me, is just a tool I need to get something done. My Kindle, however, has been a bit more than that.
I don’t watch TV. We don’t have too many hobbies. When I’m relaxing I’m either working on side projects like this site or reading. According to my GoodReads profile, which contains about 1/2 of what I actually read, 50+ books a year is rather normal and 120 hasn’t been unheard of. Reading is what helps me escape, and more often than not an escape is absolutely what I need.
Before the Kindle I picked up books from Costco and other sources. We bought so many that we built a rather impressive library at the office when we left Maui and almost paid for the moving truck with the books we sold back in Austin. Paper and hardback were great but they were so unwieldy and meant that vacations could leave me bored when I would run out of reading material.
The Kindle changed all that for me.
I’ve had one since their early days and have upgraded a few times since. Today I received my latest, the new Kindle Colorsoft and it is already a winner for me.
My Kindle has over 800 books on it. I can fit it in my pocket or throw it in a bag and it never runs out of books.
As much as I would like to spend more time at the library the books they offer just aren’t as convenient for me to move around with. I try periodically but always come back to the Kindle.
Few devices have opened up so many worlds for me. Places I can escape to, topics I can learn and characters I can get to know are always on hand and I just can’t see wanting to give that up.
So for all the devices I’ve had the Kindle is still, by far, my favorite and I’m really looking forward to my latest model.
